A BattleTag is one identity across every Blizzard game and a decade of guild rosters, so it tends to be old and deliberately kept. The suffix is the complication: the visible half of a BattleTag is not unique, so an exact string match may be a different player entirely — the discriminator is what actually identifies someone.
